I think it is okay to use ai as a resource to help with word-smithing and ensuring your resume and cover letter align with the position post. However, when it is clear ai wrote it without the human going back to ensure it is human, I take issue with it. Then it is just playing with words vs adding value and enhancing resume content.

@ktherrien - Great answer! I agree… and wonder - what would you do if you had a Very niche role and you could tell the applicant has the experience you want but did use AI in their resume and didn’t go back to ensure it reads well (‘human’)?
I don’t think anyone is helping themselves by doing so. The more you outsource your ability to write and think, the more those muscles will atrophy. You getting better at writing and expressing your thoughts- by writing and expressing your thoughts. And if you can’t explain what you’ve done and where you’ve added value without an LLM producing that language for you- then I’m not sure how well you know your own role.
So, “should” someone in terms of is it ethical or not? I don’t know if I’d make a strong argument that it is inherently unethical- but, I am certain it is not helping you develop those skills, if you’re not doing the heavy lifting of creating the content, but just cleaning up some weird usage or grammar the LLM got wrong.
If you want to improve your writing skills, how you describe yourself and your accomplishments, how well you can then speak about those things extemporaneously- then no, you definitely should not use it, you should put the work in yourself!
The candidates need to have their own voice in the resume. if you cannot describe what you did before in a written format, how else are you going to describe it in an interview?
Using GenAI tools to get ideas on writing impactful resume is alright but do not copy paste or use superfluous language from it.
